Ketosis in dairy cattle

The postpartum period is a critical stage of lactation for a high producing dairy cow. This period is characterized by drastic metabolic changes, immunosuppression, negative energy balance (NEB) and elevated levels of stress, which can lead to increased incidence of diseases and decreased animal efficiency. Ketosis is one metabolic disease, frequently observed in high producing herds. Ketosis usually occurs within a few days to a few weeks after calving.

The Nov. 6 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly e-newsletter from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites an August 2009 case report of a 35-year old woman from Pennsylvania who developed rabies vaccinia virus infection as a result of contact with oral rabies vaccination (ORV) bait intended for wildlife. The bait contains liquid vaccinia-rabies glycoprotein (V-RG) recombinant virus vaccine.
